Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, invites applications for the Besl Family Chair in Ethics/Religion and Society. This visiting faculty position is open to promising early-career scholars in the humanities and is renewable annually for up to 3 years. A Ph.D. is required by start of the position in the fall of 2018. The successful candidate will join Xavier faculty in the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts serving a diverse population of students. Xavier’s location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.
The E/RS Focus of Xavier’s core curriculum includes courses in philosophy, theology, and literature, as well as other courses that foster interdisciplinary engagement with socially significant issues. The Besl Chair will teach 3 undergraduate courses per year in the E/RS Focus of the core and support the 2018-2021 E/RS speaker series, “Conversations Across the American Divide,” both by participating in the series and by engaging diverse groups of students in learning opportunities that bridge cultural and political divisions. Applicants should also have a robust program of research and should be able to discuss interdisciplinary issues that speak to the 2018-2021 theme of the series. Candidates should submit a dossier that includes a letter of application, a C.V., a graduate transcript, evidence of excellence in teaching, a statement on research, a statement on their ability to address diverse and divided groups, and brief descriptions of at least 2 possible E/RS courses.
