Lecturer and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Japanese
School of Languages and Cultures
Wellington, New Zealand
Applications are invited for two positions in Japanese, one at the level of Lecturer and the other at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. These are permanent full-time positions and expected to commence in either February or June 2018.
Both appointees will maintain a high quality research record consistent with the research strategy of the School and of the University and enhance the School's capacity to supervise MA and PhD theses.
The successful applicants will be involved in administering and teaching Japanese language and culture courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as contributing to some cross-Programme and cross-School courses. They will have native or near-native Japanese language ability as well as strong English language skills. Academic staff in the School are normally expected to teach an average of 7-8 hours per week.
Areas of research specialisation and teaching competence are open, but should complement and reinforce existing strengths in the Asian Languages and Cultures Programme, as well as enhancing the School's commitment to cross-programme collaboration and interdisciplinarity and the broader research strategies of the University. The successful applicant will contribute to building opportunities for new postgraduate supervision and promoting strategic interdisciplinary research, collaborations and engagement with stakeholders and the wider community, and foster a productive and collegial environment. While scholars whose interests lie in any discipline of Japanese Studies are urged to apply, applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in Japanese culture and society, popular culture, intercultural communication and other areas of relevance to the School are particularly welcome.
Further information can be obtained from Dr Stephen Epstein, Director of Asian Languages and Cultures Programme, email stephen.epstein@vuw.ac.nz or phone +64 04 463 5703.
