Assistant Professor of Migration Studies
Tenure system position
Start date: August 16, 2018
The Department of Linguistics, Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages (LGSAAL) and the Department of Romance and Classical Studies (RCS) at Michigan State University invite applications for a tenure-system position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2018. We seek candidates specializing in Migration Studies with an interest and ability in culturally engaged digital humanities and any of the language programs of these departments.
The successful candidate will be a faculty member of the newly established School of Language Sciences & Literary and Cultural Studies (SLS&LCS), within Michigan State's College of Arts & Letters. SLS&LCS is being formed from the merger of the Department of Linguistics, Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages (http://linglang.msu.edu/), the Department of Romance and Classical Studies (http://www.rcs.msu.edu/), and the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA, http://celta.msu.edu/). It brings together teachers and scholars of language learning and teaching, world literatures and cultures, and linguistics to investigate cultural production, local and global communities, language learning and cognition viewed through the lens of the great variety and diversity of the world's languages. The School's collaborative environment promotes world-class research agenda, innovative teaching, opportunities for outreach and community service, and enhanced learning experiences for students.
The successful candidate will be appointed on an academic year basis and will engage in an active program of research, service, and teaching (two courses per semester), including teaching in the General Education program in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts & Letters. The candidate will contribute to the College of Arts & Letters' Critical Diversity in the Digital Age (CDDA) initiative (see www.cal.msu.edu/criticaldiversity) through CEDAR, the new consortium for CDDA. CEDAR embodies an ethos of critical diversity and emphasizes creative openness rather than simple inclusion in pre-existing structures (see http://www.cal.msu.edu/criticaldiversity/cedar).
Candidates must show promise of strong scholarship and publication, a commitment to excellence in teaching, and the desire to work collaboratively with faculty in the School undergraduate and/or graduate programs, CDDA and the College of Arts & Letters. Native or near-native proficiency in English and the language of the program in which the candidate would teach is required. Candidates should also provide evidence of commitment to technologically innovative scholarship, which may take the form of digital text analysis, data visualization, digital exhibitions and/or archival collections, Geographic Information System (GIS), data tools, story mapping, and/or video/film projects.
Minimum requirements include Ph.D. in hand by the appointment date of August 16, 2018. Interest and experience in collaborative and innovative/active learning teaching models are also desired.
Applications must be submitted electronically to the Michigan State University Human Resources website www.careers.msu.edu posting #474572. Qualified applicants should submit a) a cover letter, b) a current curriculum vitae, c) a statement of teaching/research philosophy that highlights the alignment of the candidate's credentials with desired qualifications, d) a research sample, e) a summary of the candidate's experience with diversity in the classroom and/or in past or planned research endeavors, any experience mentoring diverse students or community outreach initiatives, and f) three current letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin December 8th and will continue until the position is filled.
