Adjunct Professor - Development Economics
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | District of Columbia, United States |
Position: | Temporary |
BACKGROUND:
The School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute is a nonprofit, NEASC-accredited graduate school that offers master’s degrees and graduate level certificates, as well as professional development programs. Our learning community is shaped by faculty and students committed to advancing sustainability, equity, inclusion, and social justice, across a diversity of sectors. Virtually all students have experienced living in a culture other than their own. Although the main campus of the Graduate Institute is in Brattleboro, Vermont, in 2011 World Learning opened its first satellite campus in Washington, DC.
SIT’s Master of Arts in Sustainable Development: International Policy and Management degree program is designed to significantly advance students’ leadership capacity, and practical skills, particularly within the areas of sustainability (through an intentional focus on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals) and social justice, as well as the specialized areas of monitoring and evaluation, social innovation, and policy advocacy. Students earn their degree in just one year while benefiting from the resources available through SIT’s parent organization, World Learning—a global nonprofit— and the broader marketplace of development organizations headquartered in the US capital.
SUMMARY OF COURSE - Economics
This course is a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and exploring the many dimensions of economic principles and this newly globalized economic environment. The course takes a theoretical and applied approach to the study of fiscal and monetary policy; trade policy; foreign direct investment; balance of payments; foreign exchange; capital flows; and currency crises. Relying heavily on case studies and real-life examples, students examine the impact of government policies on businesses and NGOs, and vice versa, and are thus prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the global economy. The course also explores the macroeconomic environment within which organizations operate, identifying and examining the macroeconomic forces that managers must understand and consider in their direction of an organization, program, or project. Sources of macroeconomic information and how to incorporate them in decision making are examined. Specific emphasis is placed on the needs and requirements of nonprofit organizations in the contemporary environment.
PLEASE NOTE: the focus of this course is development economics for student who have no, or little, background in economics and will not be majoring in that field. It is an important component of the curriculum for the Sustainable Development degree in that it supports and feeds into the Theory and Practice of Sustainable Development and Issues in sustainable Development courses.
