The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is looking for an innovative and passionate individual to join our team and inspire citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.
The Applied Research Division (ARD) of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is currently seeking an Applied Research Scholar.
The Mandel Center’s role is to support the Museum’s mission by: helping to shape and strengthen the field of Holocaust studies through activities and programs that stimulate new research on Holocaust-related topics; encouraging networking and cooperative endeavors among Holocaust scholars; and training future Holocaust scholars. The ARD contributes to these efforts by planning and carrying out research projects that add to our knowledge of the Holocaust. The position is located in our Washington, DC, office. The incumbent will participate in the design, development, and creation of team and individual projects pursued with the primary goal of advancing knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust and stimulating research in the Museum’s vast collections. The Applied Research Scholar will also contribute to the development of digital strategies and platforms.
This is a full-time donated position (non-Federal), paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent is primarily responsible for the conceptualization and production of specific volumes of the USHMM Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945. This task involves the following subtasks:
- Define the content and structure of assigned volumes
- Plan and conduct, or direct, the required research
- Update and maintain the computer database and filing system to track each camp entry and contributor
- Help to develop, implement, and maintain a digital format for the publication of Encyclopedia texts and related material
- Oversee the work of contract researchers and volunteers in supplementing, writing, editing, and/or translating entries
- Identify, recruit, and manage contributors
- Review and edit entries and other texts
- Write parts of the volumes, as needed
- Procure photographs and any necessary permissions, and prepare maps and indexes;
- Coordinate and collaborate with the series editor and other team members
- Ensure that the volumes are produced in a timely manner and consistent with the highest scholarly standards
Other duties may include:
- Preparing in-depth studies, scholarly works, and reports on assigned topics specifically for publication and/or other use in accordance with the scholarly research and publication goals of the Mandel Center and other mandates of the Museum
- Participating in the Mandel Center’s archival acquisition activities in areas of expertise
- Attending scholarly conferences, as assigned, to present papers based on the Mandel Center’s research projects or organize panels related to the assigned project
- Participating as a subject-area specialist in the full range of Mandel Center programs and performing such other duties as may be required by the Mandel Center to fulfill priority goals
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD with corresponding specialization or ABD required.
- Expertise in the planning, organization, coordination, and management of scholarly projects, especially edited reference publications, digital humanities platforms, and/or written or oral presentations.
- Expert professional knowledge of twentieth century European history, with special emphasis on the history of the Holocaust or Europe during the Second World War.
- Broad and detailed professional knowledge of historical research methods and techniques, including the collection, analysis/interpretation, and presentation of complex historical data in print and digital format.
- Knowledge of relevant research resources available in local repositories, to include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the USHMM library and archives.
- Ability to exercise critical judgment in the evaluation of primary and secondary sources to ensure the authority of Mandel Center scholarly products.
- Ability to engage a broad network of Holocaust scholars in order to meet the goals of the project and wider Mandel Center and USHMM goals, and to expand the institution’s connections with scholars, disciplines, countries, and institutions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, which are necessary to develop and implement research plans, prepare briefing papers, make presentations, maintain effective liaison with a wide variety of contacts, and consult with subject-area specialists and scholars within and outside the agency.
- Interpersonal skills that will allow the incumbent to lead, instruct, inform, and/or coordinate with a wide variety of people in the Museum and in other institutions and settings.
- Knowledge of personal computers and software sufficient to establish, access, and update files and websites; maintain project schedules; and prepare reports and publishable texts.
- Advanced research knowledge of German is preferred; knowledge of other European languages such as Polish or Yiddish is also highly desirable, but not required to qualify.
- Experience with the design, development, and creation of digital humanities products for research and teaching preferred.
