Job Description: The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Contemporary China with a disciplinary basis in social sciences, particularly anthropology, sociology, human geography, and urban studies. The appointment is open rank. The position will begin July 1, 2018. Candidates with a comparative East Asia focus or global orientation will be preferred. The appointee will teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and is expected to work closely with faculty in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and related social science departments. Participation in the Columbia College Global Core will be expected. PhD. degree must be completed by September 1, 2017.
Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2017 and continue until the position is filled. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum degree requirement: Ph.D.
Minimum Qualifications: All candidates must have excellent scholarship and excellent promise for future development as scholars and teachers. Candidates for the rank of full professor should be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment. Candidates for tenured associate professor should possess a demonstrated record of professional achievement and have attained distinction in their field of specialization. Candidates for untenured associate professor need to show great promise of attaining distinction in their fields. Candidates for assistant professor should have successful graduate training and be starting a career of independent professional accomplishment.
Additional information: Applications must include cover letter, CV, abstract of dissertation or first book (for applicants at the assistant professor rank), description of teaching and research interests, two sample syllabi (submitted as Document 1), a sample of written work, and a list of three references.

Applicants for this position at the tenured level should enter information on three persons who may be contacted for a letter of reference.
