Connecticut College, Gender and Women's Studies
Gender and Women’s Studies Fuller-Maathai Chair and Department Chair
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Connecticut, United States |
Position: | Department Chair |
The Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) Department at Connecticut College seeks qualified applicants at the advanced Associate or Full Professor level to fill the Fuller-Maathai Chair and serve as department chair; the appointment begins July 1, 2017, with classes in session in late August 2017. The person who occupies this position will chair a thriving three-person department, with 25 majors, 10 minors, and over 70 affiliated faculty members.
The department seeks a senior scholar whose research and teaching are centered in the field of gender, women’s, and sexuality studies. We are open to all areas within the field. Candidates with demonstrated experience of program-building and collaborative leadership are preferred. The department is seeking to extend and deepen its role as an intellectual hub for feminist and queer/sexuality studies, as it forges connections with other departments, centers, and scholars across campus. This opportunity to shape the GWS department aligns with the College’s implementation of a revised general education curriculum that prioritizes interdisciplinarity, full participation, and global-local engagement.
The normal course load at Connecticut College is five courses per year; there is one course remission for chairing the department. An endowed research fund is attached to the Fuller-Maathai Chair. The College has a generous sabbatical policy and other supports for research.
Requirements
We seek an advanced Associate or Full Professor with substantial experience directing a department, program, or center, or other relevant experience. A Ph.D. is required. Preference will be given to applicants with extensive experience working in or with gender, women’s or sexuality studies departments. Applicants must have made a significant research contribution to GWS and have an ongoing research program that extends critical feminist inquiry at the intersections of gender and sexuality with categories of analysis such as race, class, nation, religion, and disability.
Candidates should enjoy working and teaching in an interdisciplinary small liberal arts college environment. We seek evidence of substantial experience with progressive leadership, preferably including successful mentoring of junior faculty, teaching relevant to GWS, and a commitment to shared governance and collaboration both within and outside the department. Preference will be given to those who have served as a department chair.
Connecticut College is a private, highly selective institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. Recognizing that intellectual vitality and diversity are inseparable, the College has embarked on a significantly successful initiative to diversify its faculty, student body, and curriculum. The College seeks creative scholars excited about working in a liberal arts setting, with its strong focus on engaged teaching, participation in shared governance, and active involvement in an institution-wide advancement of diversity.
Review of applications will begin on February 21 and will continue until the position is filled. Skype interviews with semi-finalists will be conducted in late March. Campus interviews will take place in early to mid-April. Please submit, via Interfolio http://apply.interfolio.com/39949, the application letter, curriculum vitae (including the names of three references), a writing sample, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations. Your letter of application should detail how your research agenda, teaching, and leadership experience fit the job description, the department, and the College. The writing sample should be approximately 25 pages of published work that best represents your central contribution to the field of gender, women’s, and sexuality studies. References will be requested from candidates who are selected as semi-finalists in March.
