Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a Middle School 5th grade English/History teacher, starting with the 2017-2018 school year (beginning in mid to late August, 2017).
Responsibilities
The English/History Teacher, reporting to the Middle School English and History Department Heads, will join two highly collaborative departments that together consist of nine faculty members. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
· Share responsibilities with the 5th-grade math-science teacher for overseeing and instructing 34 students at this entry-point grade level at Lakeside School.
· Teach language arts and social studies to two 5th-grade sections of seventeen students each.
· Participate in the work of the English Department and History Department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment.
· Serve as a co-advisor for a group of 5th-grade students.
· Participate actively as a member of the 5th grade-level team.
· Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed.
· Attend English Department, History Department, grade-level team, and faculty meetings.
· Participate in the life of the school community including outdoor trips, field trips, and service learning activities.
Requirements and Qualifications
The successful applicant will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in English or history; a Master’s degree in either subject or a related field is preferred. Middle-school or elementary-school (grades 4-6) teaching experience is preferred, as is a demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for young adolescents. The candidate must be able to work with students who vary in ability and learning styles, and have experience instructing diverse populations of students. Computer (PC/Windows platform) proficiency is required. Ideally, candidates will have some experience in shaping an integrated language arts/social studies curriculum at the middle-school level. References should address the candidate's ability to instruct successfully a wide range of students and to work with other adults in a high functioning, collaborative, and innovative educational setting. Candidates must satisfactorily complete a nationwide criminal background check and a Washington State Patrol background check.
