Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Dean Supervisor II, of Academic Programs for Douglass Residential College (DRC), the women's college at Rutgers-New Brunswick. As the leader of Academic Programs for the College, the Assistant Dean is part of a team of Assistant Deans and a leading member of a faculty advisory committee, who provides leadership to the college regarding academic programs. This position reports to the Associate Dean of the College. Douglass Residential College enrolls 2,500 highly diverse and high achieving undergraduate women from most schools at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Douglass is the only women’s college within a leading research university in the nation, and benefits from the synergy between the College and Rutgers’ faculty and programs. With the new strategic plan for Douglass in place, the Assistant Dean will drive the vision for academic learning at the College.
Academic responsibilities of the position include developing a vision for and overseeing the academic programs at the College to provide students with a forward looking and innovative curriculum relevant to diverse women's lives today and in the future: Current programs include: (1) the Global Village themed living learning communities, with corresponding academic courses (one course for each living-learning community) (2) the "Douglass course" (required) serving approximately 600 students a year in approximately 25 sections, a course offered in conjunction with the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers; 3) the Voorhees Mentor course offering students’ academic leadership opportunities in the Douglass course, 4) collaborations with the Honors College and Honors Programs at Rutgers to provide Douglass honors students with special learning and academic leadership opportunities; (5) collaboration with the Douglass Project for Rutgers women in Math, Science, and Engineering to develop a new program on STEM and Global issues. The Assistant Dean also has opportunities to implement new initiatives as the vision develops. Opportunities for national and international collaborations are encouraged as is publication in relevant journals regarding women's and undergraduate education. Collegiality and team-based work style are essential.
Administrator responsibilities include direct oversight of the budget, staff, program concepts and delivery, assessment, and daily operation of the unit. This includes collaborative development, including review and enhancement of current programs, the development of new curricula, and the integration of various programs for maximum synergy and efficiency. Budget planning, development and oversight of the unit are essential. The Assistant Dean will work with the Dean of the College and the College's development staff to obtain donor funding, and will seek internal and external funding through grant opportunities. The Assistant Dean of Academic Programs represents the College in the department of Women’s and Gender Studies, the Rutgers Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs (GAIA Centers), and develops working relationships with other key units at Rutgers New Brunswick.
Functioning collaboratively, among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Creates a coherent vision for the academic programs to tie them into an integrated education for Douglass students, and to bring fresh and new visions for innovative learning.
• Engages with students to enhance their learning and achievement through advising, support, and direction
• Leads the Office of Academic Programs including the planning, organization, and direction of staff, resources, budgets, strategic planning implementation, assessment, and reporting;
• Collaboration with the Dean of the College and the development office to support donor giving to the academic programs, including seeking internal and external grants for program support and innovation;
• Collaborates on a vision for a new Global/STEM initiatives in collaboration with the Douglass Project for Rutgers Women in Math, Science, and Engineering;
• Overall supervision of staff and vision for the Academic Programs Office at Douglass (inclusive of the Global Village, the Douglass course, and an honors program), including curriculum and mission for global and local awareness throughout the academic content.
• Ongoing collaboration with the Douglass Project for Rutgers Women in Math, Science and Engineering for a cohesive curriculum for academic course, "Introduction to Scientific Research."
• Works with the Dean of the College to provide leadership of a faculty advisory committee;
• Works collaboratively and develops new partnerships with internal Douglass staff, Rutgers faculty, and relevant centers and units at Rutgers.
• Works with Douglass staff who deliver student programs or administer services to students to ensure integration and coordination of the co-curricular and curricular learning outcomes of DRC.
• Collaborates as part of a team of Assistant Deans to advise the Associate Dean and implement strategic initiatives.
Qualifications: Ph.D. highly preferred with preference given to candidates with a doctorate in Women and Gender Studies, Global Affairs, Higher Education, or related fields in humanities or social sciences. Master's degree required in Women and Gender Studies, Global Affairs, Higher Education, or related fields in humanities or social sciences.
Mininum five years experience in curriculum development, higher education adminstration and/or college level teaching required. Preference for experience in women's and gender studies, or related field.
Experience with student engagement, relationship development with stakeholders and the ability to collaborate with individuals from different departments, programs, and colleges preferred.
Knowledge and understanding of women's education and diversity preferred. Must have knowledge of budget management. Requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and excellent collegial skills. Must have standard office computer literacy.
