PhD Studentship: Wellcome Trust Doctoral Studentship in the history of intoxicants and narcotics in the modern Philippines

A three-year doctoral studentship is available for candidates who wish to explore the history of the consumption and control of substances labelled as narcotics and intoxicants in the Philippines in the twentieth century. It is one of four studentships included in the ‘The Asian Cocaine Crisis: Pharmaceuticals, consumers and control in Asia, c. 1900-1945’ project funded by the Wellcome Trust with Professor James Mills of The Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH) Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde as Principal Investigator. The student will join a team of researchers that includes partners in Glasgow, Shanghai, Bangalore, Leiden and Washington and which aims to produce fresh perspectives on the history of narcotics and intoxicants in modern Asia.
The successful candidate will enjoy resources to travel to archives, to project meetings in China, in India and in the UK and also to conferences around the world. The student will join the thriving postgraduate community at the CSHHH Glasgow, will be a full member of the Graduate School in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde (http://www.strath.ac.uk/humanities/graduateschool/), and will have access to the resources of both the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities (http://www.sgsah.ac.uk/) and the Scottish Graduate School for the Social Sciences (http://www.socsciscotland.ac.uk/)
Fee waiver at Home/International rates and annual stipend, starting at £19,919

The successful candidate will
- Have a Masters degree in History or a related subject
- Be able to write in academic English (IELTS minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual test score below 5.5)
- Note that relevant additional language skills would be an advantage.
