Position: | Assistant Professor |
Columbus College of Art & Design is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor position in History of Art & Design. This faculty position within the CORE Liberal Arts department is to be filled for the 2017-2018 academic year and thereafter. This position requires teaching a full-time load of 9 hours (3 courses) per semester along with additional administrative/service responsibilities. The candidate should have an emphasis in design history with a specialization in at least one of the following design areas: industrial design, interior design, illustration, animation, graphic design, or a related design field.
Research: We seek a colleague who is actively engaged in their own research. Recognizing the vibrant experience that active scholars and practitioners bring to our community, we are interested in and supportive of ongoing and future work.
Teaching: We value teachers who are excited about assisting young artists and designers as they explore the rich history of the art & design fields. We believe that art & design history and critical theory are most valuable and accessible to studio practitioners when it is presented in the context of their practice. Empathy, curiosity, and rigor are qualities that we value in colleagues who strive to support and challenge and bring out the best in our students.
Service: We expect leadership in undergraduate curriculum development, advising, committee participation, and governance within the departments, college, and field at large.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach design history courses on a wide range of design historical topics and will work with students at a variety of levels (from first year undergraduates to MFA students). Passion for teaching undergraduate art and design students and a commitment to engaging those students in a critical conversation about design are essential.
Qualifications: A PhD in a related discipline with an emphasis in design history (Art History, Design History, Design Studies, History, History of Technology, Architectural History, Material Culture, American Studies, Visual Culture, etc), a record of research activity, and teaching experience at the college level. Candidates who are presently ABD but will have their Ph.D. completed by the end of the Spring 2017 term will be considered.
