The Naval War College (NWC) is a Professional Military Education (PME) institution serving the nation, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Navy. U.S. graduates earn a Master of Arts degree in National Security & Strategic Studies or in Defense & Strategic Studies, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The College has four main missions: Educate and Develop Leaders; Support Defining the Future Navy and Associated Roles and Missions; Support Combat Readiness; and Strengthen Global Maritime Partnerships. More information on the College can be found at www.usnwc.edu.
Maritime History Center: The Maritime History Center (MHC) manages and directs the Naval War College’s maritime history research and sea service heritage programs throughout the College. It serves as the central resource and contact point in matters relating to maritime history and has particular responsibility for implementing and coordinating the College's research and writing program in this area. The MHC also provides the interface between the NWC, the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and the NWC Museum. The Director of the MHC simultaneously serves as the Director of the NWC Museum and falls under the Dean of Academics. Additional support to the Center for Naval Warfare Studies, the College of Operational and Strategic Leadership, and International programs in support of the NWC’s four main missions aligns with the core purpose of the MHC and is an integral aspect of the Director’s role. The MHC works closely with the Ernest J. King Visiting Professor of Maritime History, who serves the College as a senior academic expert in the field of maritime history.
Responsibilities: The MHC Director will report to the Associate Dean of Academics for Electives and Research. The Director will be expected to support the Dean of Academics’ history and research agenda as well as research into the NWC’s other maritime history needs as established by the Dean, the Provost, and the President of the NWC. The Director’s areas of responsibility include historical research in global and U.S. maritime history, NWC command and local naval history, occasional maritime history publications, occasional maritime history conferences, commemorative events, history fellowships and prizes, oral history, and coordination with NWC archivists on the collection, preservation, and accessibility of vital records and artifacts. Additionally, the MHC Director will also serve as the Director for the NWC Museum and will execute the ongoing interface between the NWC, NHHC, and the NWC Museum. In this role, the Director will be expected to provide advice and support to the Museum’s Managing Director to inform the establishment of museum policy, the development of ongoing and special exhibits, and the general role of the Museum in executing the College’s missions consistent with the NWC-NHHC Memorandum of Agreement. The Director will also serve as the NWC representative on the museum advisory council.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. from an accredited university in one or more of the following areas: history, international relations, strategic studies, or a related field. The position requires demonstrated experience working in maritime history programs that provide research, education, and information presentation.
A background and demonstrated familiarity with museum operations, historical exhibit development, public history, maritime historiography, historical research methods, and archiving are all highly desirable.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens and capable of obtaining a Department of Defense SECRET security clearance.
Salary Considerations: Salary is competitive and is accompanied by a generous Federal Civil Service package that includes health insurance, pension and retirement saving plans (with employer matching contributions), paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
