ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, Tempe, AZ (Job 11816) The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies (SHPRS) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure eligible Assistant Professor in History with a specialization in the history of twentieth century China. The anticipated starting date is August 16, 2017.
The successful candidate will have a tenure home in SHPRS and teach classes on the history of modern China and Asia in the undergraduate and graduate programs, including lower-division courses, specialized upper division courses, and the supervision of graduate students. Within the broad field of twentieth-century China, all specialties are welcome.
The successful applicant will work in collaboration with other ASU faculty members to (1) foster Asia-focused research at the university across its many Schools and in concert with the Center for Asian Research and (2) to sustain and build a robust undergraduate curriculum in Asia studies in connection with majors in the School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) (e.g. Chinese studies, Japanese studies) and SHPRS (Asia Studies), as well as related certificate programs.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in modern Chinese history by time of appointment
• Demonstrated promise as an excellent scholar
• Teaching capacity in related societies and histories of Asia
• Native or near native proficiency in English and Chinese Mandarin
Desired Qualifications:
• Evidence of interdisciplinary interests and expertise
• Evidence of successful teaching experience
• Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities
