The Department of History at Francis Marion University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in archaeology or historical archaeology. Candidates are expected to have expertise in the history and archaeology of the U.S. colonial and revolutionary period. Applicants whose subfields complement the Department's existing offerings, who have at least 18 graduate credits in history, and who have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment are preferred. ABD will receive consideration. Demonstrated success in teaching is a plus.
This position will include significant responsibilities in both teaching and field research as the Department expands its undergraduate course offerings and community service in the areas of public history and archaeology. The successful candidate will teach a new Introduction to Archaeology course, an upper-level field course to be developed, and other new or existing classes. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will engage in archaeological field studies, with an initial research focus on the wealth of sites in eastern South Carolina associated with the Revolutionary War career of the University's namesake, General Francis Marion. The successful candidate may also develop new areas of research and publication, with a preferred focus on South Carolina. He or she will have access to on-campus lab facilities. Duties will include supervision of undergraduate internships in public history and archaeology.
The successful candidate will join the faculty of a comprehensive regional university with a strong focus on teaching and public service. He or she will play an active role in student advising and recruitment activities, faculty governance, and engagement with the larger community.
