About the Department/Speech Communication Program
The Department of Communications and Performing Arts at Kingsborough Community College offers a major in Speech Communication with two concentrations. The Communication Studies Concentration is for students who want to work in communication focused careers and/or transfer to four year institutions for further study in areas including Career Communication, Small Group Communication, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication and/or Performance Studies in Communication. The Speech Pathology Concentration is for students who wish to pursue further study at the undergraduate and graduate levels to prepare to work as licensed Speech Pathologists who diagnose and treat persons who have speech, language and/or hearing disabilities.
About the Position
The Communication and Performing Arts Department at Kingsborough Community College (KBCC) invites qualified applicants to apply for three Assistant Professor positions starting in Fall 2017. The successful applicant will have the ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Communication Studies (e.g. Public Speaking, Introduction to Communications, Small Group communication, Oral Interpretation); Speech ESL (e.g. Listening and Speaking Skills, ESL Public Speaking) and/or Speech Pathology (e.g. Language Development, Phonetics, Voice and Articulation). Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.
The Department is seeking to attract new faculty who will enrich the department and the program through teaching developmental and major area courses and by participating in department and college activities such as curriculum development, learning assessment, faculty development, major fairs, and student mentoring/student club advising. Productive scholarship in an area related to one’s expertise is expected. Research and publication are expected for tenure and promotion. The work schedule is determined by the needs of the department and the college.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in Speech Communication or in a closely related area. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Experience teaching in an urban/multicultural environment, teaching in Speech/Communication at the college level, teaching in a learning community, online, writing intensive and women’s/gender studies classes are considered assets but not required.
