History Associates is actively recruiting qualified individuals with experience in assessing, surveying, arranging, preserving, and describing archives, including paper documents, audiovisual, photographic, and digital materials. Specifically, we are seeking candidates with demonstrated experience in successfully leading teams and projects.
The archivist will be based in History Associates’ office in Rockville, MD as part of a diverse team of archivists, collections managers, and historians. Some project work may occur at off-site locations within a 35 mile radius of the Rockville office. Occasional short-term, long distance travel may be required.
This position is full-time; 40 hours per week and includes a competitive salary and excellent benefits package including paid holidays; annual and sick leave; medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; and a 401(k) plan.
Responsibilities
The archivist will lead and work on a variety of archival projects as needed; work may include the following:
• Assessing archival materials to report findings and make recommendations for improved management, preservation, and use of the archives
• Surveying large groups of unorganized materials with an eye to making appraisal and arrangement decisions based on client needs and requirements, as well as archival best practice
• Writing processing plans that will include a hierarchical organization schema, required preservation activities, and arrangement and description specifications
• Arranging and rehousing collections according to the processing plan created by the archivist and in accordance with standard processing approaches (including MPLP)
• Describing archival materials using various cataloging systems; creating finding aids that are EAD and DACS compliant
• Managing project budgets, teams, and clients to achieve deliverables on-time, under budget, and to ultimate client satisfaction
Education Requirements
• Master’s degree in library science, history, or related discipline with a concentration in archival studies or archival courses, seminars, internships, or relevant practical experience
• Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists and/or Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) credentials are preferred
Experience Requirements
• At least three-five years of demonstrated experience working on archives projects in a variety of formats and media types, and with progressive responsibility
• Demonstrated experience successfully leading/managing teams and projects
• Demonstrated knowledge of professional archival methods and practices
• Experience identifying problems and implementing recommendations for their solution
• Ability to work independently and exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment
• Demonstrated experience appraising records for archival value
• Proven experience working under strict deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience effectively working in both independent and team environments
• Experience working with three-dimensional object collections preferred though not required
• Comprehensive understanding and demonstrated use of tools and programs available for surveying and processing electronic records preferred though not required
