University of Chicago Divinity School
CHICAGO, IL
The University of Chicago Divinity School invites applications for the position of Dean. Chicago's Divinity School uniquely combines one of the nation's largest, strongest, and longest-standing programs in the interdisciplinary study of religion with a vibrant program in ministerial studies and religious leadership. The successful candidate will be a preeminent and forward-looking academic leader prepared to maintain the integrity of the School's mission and strengthen it in an era in which thoughtful public discourse about religion is crucial.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean provides organizational leadership and strategic direction while representing the School to the other academic units of the University and to the larger public. The Dean oversees faculty recruitment, tenure, promotion, diversification, and staff performance; leads fundraising initiatives and student recruitment efforts; actively conducts alumni relations, supervises capital projects, and manages the institutional budget. As one of eleven academic deans at the University of Chicago, the Dean collaborates with deans, department chairs, institute directors and officers at the University. Internally, the Dean oversees four graduate programs: doctoral programs in eleven areas of study, and three Master's programs, the AMRS, the MA, and the MDiv. The Divinity School has a full-time enrollment of over 300 students (just over half of them pursuing the Ph.D.), taught by a faculty of more than 30 members; it has an annual budget of nearly $20 million and an endowment of approximately $120 million. The Dean represents the Divinity School to the central administration, Board of Trustees, the Divinity School Visiting Committee, students, University alumni, the wider academic community, and diverse public constituencies nationally and internationally.
