Open-Rank Professor
Department of Ethnic Studies
University of San Diego
The Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of San Diego invites applications for an open rank, tenure-track or tenured professor of Ethnic Studies beginning in Fall 2017. Qualified candidates must hold a PhD or terminal degree in Ethnic Studies or a related field and have expertise in American Indian Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies. Specific areas of research are open; however, we are especially interested in work that addresses health, environmental justice, and/or decolonization. Applicants must have an active research agenda and be able to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in American Indian Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies; an ability to teach Introduction to Ethnic Studies is required. Demonstrated experience working with American Indian tribes and communities is strongly preferred.
The University of San Diego is a private Roman Catholic university that sits on the Indigenous homeland of the Kumeyaay people. The San Diego region is the third most populated area for American Indians in California and is surrounded by four autonomous Indigenous nations: the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño, and Cahuilla. These four nations, represented by 17 federally recognized tribes, make San Diego County home to the largest concentration of individual tribes in the United States. San Diego is also the second largest city in the state, near the busiest port of entry on an international border, and hosts significant ethnic, immigrant, and refugee communities from around the globe, including Central America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Africa. Serving more than 5,500 undergraduate students, the university holds a commitment to advancing academic excellence, global citizenship, ethical knowledge and conduct, and compassionate service. The Department of Ethnic Studies is a vibrant, interdisciplinary program that critically situates itself within this geopolitical site and engages students in the historical, cultural, and socioeconomic dynamics of race and ethnicity in US and transnational contexts. At the heart of our work is a commitment to applied social justice and community service learning that directly supports the values of Catholic Social Teaching. Cover letters should clearly state how the applicant fits within this larger pedagogical and programmatic vision.
A complete application will include:
1) Cover letter that includes relevant teaching experience, research, and experience working with American Indian communities
2) Teaching statement that describes teaching philosophy for a small, liberal arts Roman Catholic university
3) Curriculum Vitae
4) Sample course syllabi for both a lower-division Introduction to Ethnic Studies course and a lower- or upper-division American Indian Studies course
5) Writing sample (25-page max)
5) Three reference letters (emailed directly by your recommenders to ethnicstudies@sandiego.edu )
To apply, please complete both of the following steps:
1. Submit your entire application as a single PDF file to ethnicstudies@sandiego.edu.
2. All candidates much register as applicants for this position on USD’s online job site. Visit http://apptrkr.com/887047, select Job IRC 21914 and create a profile. Do not upload any application documents to this site. For assistance, contact Human Resources at (619) 260-4594 or hr@sandiego.edu.
