~~James Madison College, Michigan State University seeks candidates for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Comparative Cultures and Politics (CCP), an interdisciplinary major that draws on social sciences and humanities. Applicants must have substantive expertise in applied international development in India and/or South Asia. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research takes an interdisciplinary approach to issues of poverty, caste, class, religion, gender, and/or community mobilization and speaks to fields such as cultural studies, development studies, gender studies, political economy, and/or sustainability studies.
The successful candidate will teach in the introductory Comparative Cultures and Politics sequence and the upper division curriculum, including an elective course on culture/s, politics and society in South Asia and a senior capstone seminar, and contribute to the College’s first year program. Applicants should demonstrate commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching in an interdisciplinary program and to achieving a substantial record of scholarship.
The teaching load is 2-3, 2-2. Ph.D. in a related field is required by time of appointment.
James Madison College (JMC) provides a liberal education in public affairs, combining the ethos of a small liberal arts college with the advantages of a large, diverse university. The faculty’s primary mission is excellence in undergraduate teaching, and the college is noted for its rigorous academic standards and attention to the analytical, writing and speaking skills of its students. JMC is home to four majors (CCP, International Relations, Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, and Social Relations and Policy) and four minors (Muslim Studies; Western European Studies; Political Economy; and Science, Technology, the Environment and Public Policy). In addition, JMC has close working relationships with MSU’s area studies centers and its many international teaching and research centers.
Applicants should supply a statement, addressing how their teaching and research interests would contribute to the CCP curriculum specifically and to Madison College’s curriculum and mission more broadly. Supporting materials should include a vita, transcript, three confidential letters of recommendation that speak to teaching expertise and scholarly promise, evidence of teaching approach and effectiveness, sample syllabi, and a sample of scholarship (e.g., dissertation chapter, article, conference paper).
