Assistant Professor of Diasporic Youth Cultures
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Massachusetts, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and
member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a position as assistant professor of diasporic youth cultures to begin in the fall of 2017.
We seek scholars with experience investigating young people’s cultural, social, and political engagements in and across community, national, and/or transnational spaces. We seek applications from scholars in the areas of childhood studies, critical youth studies, sociology of childhood and youth, or anthropology of childhood and youth. Successful candidates will have experience with teaching and research related to critical ethnic studies, critical race studies, and possibly additional critical perspectives such as feminist studies, critical urban education, and/or queer studies; and will also guide independent student research in these and related areas of inquiry. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach courses that familiarize students with community engaged research, ethnography, participatory action research, or other interpretive methodologies.
The position is affiliated with the School of Critical Social Inquiry, which supports a range of perspectives and methods of inquiry and emphasizes an understanding of race in the U.S. and non-Western histories, politics, social structures, and cultures. In addition, the candidate will be expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary program in Critical Studies of Childhood, Youth, and Learning. Responsibilities include instruction of four courses per year, mentoring students on independent projects, and advising. A Ph.D. is required. Hampshire College is committed to building a culturally diverse, rigorous intellectual community, and the ability to work cooperatively with faculty, students and staff of various backgrounds is vital. We actively seek applications from individuals from traditionally under-represented groups.
Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2016. Hampshire College offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits package. Applicants should submit a statement of teaching and research interests, curriculum vita, sample syllabi, sample of written scholarship, and names of three referees via our website at https://jobs.hampshire.edu/
