Position: | Post-Doctoral Fellow |
The Department of Philosophy and the History of Ideas at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship. The appointment begins on 1 February 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Place of employment: Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C.
The position
The postdoctoral position is part of the research project “The Impact of Critical Thinking: Reassessing the Kantian Legacy”, funded by an AUFF grant. Kant intended to provide a comprehensive account of human rationality. The project aims at a rational reconstruction of Kant’s original account of what he called ‘transcendental’ philosophy and its historical background, an assessment of the reception and criticism of Kant’s principles of rationality in 20th century and recent philosophy, and a transformation of his original insights into a contemporary model of critical rationality. Project activities will include organising an annual International Kant Week at Aarhus University, as well as several international conferences and graduate workshops on themes from Kant.
Research
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher who can contribute to this project. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct independent research either on Kant’s practical or on Kant’s theoretical philosophy, with a strong commitment to reconstructing Kant in the context of contemporary philosophy, including the analytic tradition. Transdisciplinary perspectives are particularly welcome. The application should contain a research proposal for the postdoctoral fellowship, highlighting how the applicant’s project will contribute to the overall research programme. The postdoctoral fellow will be part of an active international network on Kant and Kantian philosophy. The successful applicant is expected to participate in research-based project activities as well as lectures and seminars. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to work collaboratively with the project team.

Department of Philosophy and the History of Ideas
The study of both philosophy and the history of ideas at the department focuses on the thoughts and ideas that have marked the Western world from antiquity to the present day. The focus of the study of philosophy is primarily on a systematic perspective that seeks to identify the bases for our various practices and concepts. The focus of the study of the history of ideas is primarily on a historical perspective that aims at revealing our intellectual heritage. So the department regards philosophy as being concerned with the validity of our various concepts, and the history of ideas as being concerned with which concepts have been – and in some cases still are – considered valid.
In this respect, both philosophy and the history of ideas at the department are interdisciplinary in their focus. But while the history of ideas explores the relations between many different fields and disciplines, it is characteristic of philosophy that it addresses the fundamental questions that precede any division into fields and disciplines. The academic environment at the Department of Philosophy and the History of Ideas at Aarhus University is the largest of its type in Denmark, and – owing in particular to the productive tension between the systematic and historical perspectives – the research conducted here is characterised by an undogmatic and open-minded worldview. The researchers are thus involved in a variety of interdisciplinary projects both within and outside the Faculty of Arts.
