U.S. History faculty
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Washington, United States |
Position: | Tenure Track Faculty |
~U.S. HISTORY
This is a full time faculty position starting in the 2017/18 academic year.
Evergreen seeks to appoint a full-time faculty member with expertise in the social and cultural history of the United States, emphasizing the history of race, ethnicity, gender, labor and/or sexuality, or the intersections of these fields. The successful candidate will be especially committed to research and teaching (beyond surveys) 18th and 19th century U.S. history. Candidates with expertise in African American history as well as those with experience teaching diverse and underrepresented populations are particularly invited to apply. We are not looking for applicants who focus on business, diplomatic, elite political, traditional intellectual or environmental history, or on the literary or cultural studies side of U.S. History or African American Studies. The search committee expects to do preliminary interviews at the AHA in January. We will make other arrangements to interview applicants who are not able to attend the conference.
Evergreen offers its faculty unique opportunities and challenges. The college has no traditional departments; faculty teach primarily in interdisciplinary teams in theme-based, specialized full-time programs rather than in broad survey courses. Faculty provide narrative evaluations to students rather than letter grades. Over the course of a career, the successful candidate will team-teach with colleagues from the arts, social sciences, sciences, and/or humanities, as the candidate’s interests lead. Given these opportunities and challenges, applicants must address in their letters of application their vision of innovative approaches to teaching historical methods of research, interpretation, and writing in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and inquiry-based classroom. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an ability to link past to present by reflecting on how events, ideas, cultural shifts, and the activities of everyday people during the 18th and 19th centuries shaped the 20th century and the present.
Because Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary studies, the ideal candidate will show the potential for working across disciplines with faculty colleagues. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in Evergreen’s system of shared governance. Through their participation in shared governance, faculty play a significant role in most aspects of how the college is run.

• Areas of expertise in the 18th and 19th centuries;

• College level teaching experience.
