The School of Historical Studies (SHS) at Nalanda University invites applications for the position of Visiting Professor for one academic year.
The appointment shall be purely on contract basis for the duration of one year and will carry no commitment for appointment on a regular/permanent basis. The position will not carry forward beyond one year and the selected candidates will have no right to claim a tenured/tenure track position at Nalanda.
This Visiting position is to fill a leave vacancy at Professor rank for one year.
Nalanda University is a postgraduate international research university and is designated as an institution of national importance in India. The university takes its name and draws inspiration from its ancient predecessor which remains the oldest known centre of organized higher learning in the world. The University commenced its academic programmes with two Schools: Historical Studies and Ecology and Environment Studies in 2014. The School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religions will commence its academic programmes from the academic session 2016-2017.
The School of Historical Studies considers it imperative to develop and apply a multidisciplinary approach to the study of history. It brings a rich variety of methodologies and disciplinary backgrounds to bear on its research and teaching. The focus areas of the School draw their inspiration from the legacy of ancient Nalanda and its historical links with many countries in Asia and beyond. The focus areas are Asian connections, archaeology, art history, global history and economic history. The School offers a two-year master’s degree and is also developing a PhD programme.
Essential Qualifications for the Position
- Previous teaching experience with high ratings of teaching effectiveness.
- Evidence of strong scholarly activity and contributions.
- Strong fieldwork skills as evidenced by completed empirical research projects.
- Ability to teach effectively over a range of topics at the Masters level, not exclusively in the area of one’s own research expertise.
- Ability to design, develop and write a Course Curriculum.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English which is the medium of instruction of the University.
Description of the Position
The wide areas of specialization cover the whole range of courses in the School of Historical Studies. Candidates are expected to teach introductory/core courses and upper level advanced courses.
The successful candidate will have:
- Academic expertise in Global history/ Chinese History/ Economic history/ Archaeology/ Ancient history or a closely related field.
- Mastery of language(s) relevant to these areas of specialization will be an added asset.
Description of duties:
- A selected candidate is expected to contribute towards development of the curriculum for teaching Masters level courses with a thesis component in the second year.
- A selected candidate is expected to contribute toward student advising, curriculum development and other services, including but not limited to administrative tasks, in the School and the University.
- Successful candidate is expected to teach between 1.5-2 courses per semester for the Masters degree.
- A selected candidate is expected to provide support to other positions in the case of absences.
