Summary: The director of scholar programs oversees planning, implementation, and evaluation of Scholar Programs, including the resident scholar, summer scholar, and seminar programs, a colloquium series, the Cordell and J.I. Staley Prizes, and activities of the Catherine McElvain Library. This position is full-time, FLSA exempt, and reports directly to the president.
Characteristic Duties:
- Directly supervises Scholar Programs coordinator and librarian.
- Oversees organization and coordination of the SAR colloquium series.
- Works with the president and senior scholars to select members for the resident scholar, summer scholar, seminar, and book prize panels. Also conducts panel meetings and serves as a panelist for each of these reviews.
- Oversees promotion of Scholar Programs and solicitation of proposals.
- Oversees campus resources used by SAR senior scholars, research associates, and visiting research associates.
- Prepares Scholar Programs and library budgets and oversees expenditures.
- Works with directors of the Indian Arts Research Center and SAR Press to integrate complementary programming among academic divisions.
- Responsible for monitoring and reporting assessment of Scholar Programs.
- Works with the president to identify priority areas of Scholar Programs funding in accordance with the organization’s strategic plan.
- Assists with preparation of occasional grant proposals and reports for funding with assistance from the development division.
- Assists with development activities as needed.
- Serves as chair of the SAR Human Subjects Institutional Review Board.
- Maintains and develops own professional and intellectual profile in one or more of the scholarly fields that SAR supports.
Required Qualifications: An advanced degree in anthropology or related field; general knowledge of nonprofit operations, including development activities; supervisory and administrative experience; grant writing experience; proven ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with colleagues to plan, monitor, integrate, and assess programming; general knowledge of Human Subjects Institutional Review Board reviews and protocols; active engagement in scholarship and academic service activities.
Desired Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position will have broad professional training in anthropology or a closely related field (PhD preferred), demonstrated skill as an administrator, a general knowledge of library operations, an ability to write clearly and accurately, and an understanding of the factors that contribute to a successful residential fellowship program.
Salary: Commensurate with experience, range is $75,000 to $85,000. Benefits include insurance and retirement options.
