Maitripa College in Portland, Oregon, invites applications for an Adjunct Professor/ Instructor of classical Tibetan language for a seven week Classical Tibetan Language Summer Intensive, June – August, 2016.

Maitripa College confers the Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies and the Master of Divinity degrees, and is committed to Tibetan language studies. The Summer Intensive is attended by our degree students as well as graduate students from other universities, in addition to translation and linguistics professionals, Buddhist practitioners, and aspiring translators.
Adjunct appointment is for summer, 2016, with possibility of renewal for subsequent summers or terms upon satisfactory review. The appointment may start June 2016, with an on-going search until position is filled, by April 2016. Position and renewal are contingent upon budgetary approval. The professor or instructor should have a history of excellent pedagogical relationships with students and adult learners, balancing encouragement and maintenance of academic standards. The instructor will teach an introductory to intermediate level Classical Tibetan Summer Intensive, a graduate credit program equivalent to two semesters/one year in six weeks, meeting 4 hours per day, 4 days per week. A seventh week is geared towards those intermediate or advanced students focusing on translation methodology and practice. The summer program prepares Maitripa College students for continued translation study in a reading seminar with a Tibetan Geshe.
The Instructor will have access to past program syllabi and textbooks, as well as an opportunity to develop the course syllabi and materials, which should be geared towards the beginning student or student wishing systematic review, and in support of the goal of translation of Buddhist philosophy and liturgy. The Instructor is invited to take part in the life of the College, including meetings and informal events directed toward graduate training and community building, while in residence. Compensation for this position is based upon qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.A., ABD, or PhD in a relevant Humanities discipline, and/or equivalent Buddhist Studies
- Teaching evaluations or evidence of capacity for success in Tibetan language instruction

Application materials must include: 1) cover letter in which you address your pedagogical methods, experience, and plans for structuring a successful summer intensive course, 2) at least one form of evidence of teaching experience (such as student evaluations, course syllabi, or sample lesson plan), and 3) a CV including contact information for three references.
