Online Course Producer for rapidly growing Master's degree program in US history
Institution Type: | Other |
Location: | New York, United States |
Position: | Producer |
Job description:
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History seeks an Online Course Producer to handle a diverse portfolio of duties including course development, facilitation of class meetings, faculty supervision, bookkeeping and budgeting, and basic web design and maintenance for a Master’s degree program involving K-12 history teachers instructed by leading scholars of US History. This position requires an individual comfortable and effective with extensive public-facing work and juggling the demands of competing priorities, as well as a strong sense for customer service and an exceptional commitment to excellence, accuracy, and authenticity. The ideal candidate will have studied US history at the graduate level; managed or assisted the administration of instructional programs; and demonstrated skills in technical applications that may include video production, education technology, and/or website maintenance.
Expectations include:
- Management of at least eight courses per academic year, including up to three offered concurrently, and facilitation of ten class meetings per course, typically during evening hours.
- Frequent travel during the spring, summer, and fall semesters in order to facilitate live course meetings broadcast from the universities represented by each instructor.
- Careful bookkeeping and collaboration with the Institute’s finance team to ensure that course costs stay within budgeted limits.
- Close collaboration with the Institute’s Sales and Marketing team and the registrar staff at the accrediting university to launch, direct, and manage student recruitment—and regular reporting to Institute leadership on the progress of student enrollment.
- Regular and effective communication with faculty to ensure that course planning deadlines are met, including the writing of syllabi, selection of texts, and identification of teaching assistants.
- Basic web design in a Drupal system to populate new course sites within a pre-existing template, and ongoing maintenance of course sites to ensure clarity and accessibility.
- Monitor pace of grading and quality of feedback offered by three TAs for each course, and keep TAs on-schedule with regular writing of quizzes based on course lectures.
- Post newly-written quizzes to the course sites six times per course by programming them into a Drupal-based quiz engine.
- Monitor course blogs daily to quickly address individual student concerns, questions, or objectionable content.
- Tally and compute final grades for approximately 100 students per course, and report these marks to the registrar at the accrediting university.
- Distribute and report to the Institute’s leadership on results of post-course surveys.
- As needed, recruit faculty for new courses. This will include newly-developed courses as well as repeated offerings that may require new faculty.
- Work closely with Institute’s leadership and key partners at the accrediting university to regularly communicate important information about program successes, major problems, and opportunities for growth.
- Residence in or willingness and ability to move to the New York City area for a full-time position beginning in spring 2016.
Education:
M.A. in History (required), Ph.D. in History (preferred)
Compensation:
This position offers a competitive salary and comprehensive package of benefits (health, dental, 401k). The selected candidate will receive extensive training and ongoing consultation with the individual who established and grew the program over the last four years.
