Truman State University is seeking applicants for a non-tenure track faculty position in the History Department to begin August 2016. The successful applicant has the possibility of reappointment for up to three additional years (9-month contracts), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.
Responsibilities: Provide classroom instruction in lower and upper division curriculum; fulfill additional faculty duties including conducting research appropriate to the teacher-scholar model, academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences; and provide service to the University and community.
Required Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. in Modern History (field open); ABD (with Masters in specified fields) will be considered with Ph.D. completion scheduled by December 2016.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
- academic qualifications;
- teaching background or the potential for teaching (must teach World History surveys, African History survey at the lower-division level, and a variety of major electives, including military history; may also be asked to teach interdisciplinary courses as part of the Liberal Studies Program);
- evidence of scholarly activity with emphasis on the use of candidates’ scholarship to inform their teaching;
- previous experience mentoring undergraduate research students and/or willingness to mentor undergraduate research;
- evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, encouraging and mentoring students in transformative learning experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, and internships;
- compatibility with the department’s needs;
- complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage;
- evidence of commitment to liberal arts education as a teacher-scholar, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment as the highest priority;
- evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, developing critical thinking and problem solving skills in undergraduates;
- interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, scholarship, and service; and
- strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Compensation and Rank: Salary commensurate with experience and education; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.
Program: The Department of History is part of the School of Social and Cultural Studies at Truman State University. The department has 13 full-time faculty members, approximately 190 undergraduate majors, and 20 minors. The department also supports Truman’s Liberal Studies Program and provides support classes for a number of pre-professional programs. The Community: Located in Kirksville, Missouri, Truman plays a vital role in this thriving regional center of northeast Missouri. The city enjoys a low crime rate, excellent schools, and a low cost of living. Within a few minutes’ drive, a broad range of outdoor recreational opportunities is easily accessible.
