The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (www.gvsu.edu/mll) at Grand Valley State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Chinese, with a specialization in pre-modern or modern Chinese Literature. We seek candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching Chinese language courses at the college level. The position will begin in August 2016.
The teaching load is three courses per semester, typically two in Modern Languages and Literatures and one in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies through its Chinese Studies and East Asian Studies programs. Teaching responsibilities include Chinese language courses at all levels, Classical Chinese, and undergraduate literature and culture courses. The successful candidate is expected to direct summer study abroad programs to China and play an active role in Chinese curriculum development and student advising. Interdisciplinary expertise which can broaden the scope of the current East Asian Studies curriculum either regionally or thematically is a plus. Specific interdisciplinary areas of interest may include the arts, globalization, and gender and sexuality. Scholarly and professional activity expected, university and department service also required. Must demonstrate a commitment to a balance among undergraduate teaching, scholarship, and service. Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese and English required. Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment preferred, but ABD candidates with completion by August 2017 will be considered for hire at the instructor level.
