The Department of History at SUNY Geneseo invites applicants for a full time, tenure track position for an Assistant Professor in History focusing on Europe, c. 500-1500CE (excluding the British Isles) with research and/or teaching interests in digital history and/or quantitative analysis.
Required qualifications: PhD at the time of appointment (August 2016), evidence of commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, and evidence of scholarly potential. Candidates should be prepared to develop and teach a range of introductory and advanced History courses in Medieval European history, preferably in areas and/or topics not already covered by current department faculty, as well as seminars in historical research methods and/or historiography. These courses will support the College general education program, the History major and minor, and the College’s interdisciplinary minor in Medieval Studies. In addition to History courses, candidates will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary general education by teaching sections of the College’s first year writing seminar and the first course in the College’s two semester Western Humanities general education sequence.
The successful candidate will also be expected to have research and/or teaching experience that incorporates quantitative methodologies in the humanities and/or tools from the digital humanities. This could include, but is not limited to: project-based learning that involves students in the creation of digital materials, statistical analysis, research techniques based in digital archives, digital mapping, data visualization, or data-mining, and other quantitative approaches to evidence. This search is part of an interdisciplinary cluster in digital/computational analytics involving the departments of Biology, History, and the School of Business and possibly others. As part of the cluster, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with new faculty from other programs and draw on campus resources to support curricular or program development related to computational/digital analysis.
