Duties:
Teach World Civilization (World Civilization to/since 1500), plus at least one field of regional and/or thematic history such as Asia, Latin America, Middle East, religion, science, or the environment; participate in development and evaluation of curriculum and course materials, selection of textbooks, academic and career advisement, staff development programs, college, department, and faculty organizational activities, and maintain regular office hours.
Primary assignment: History 33 and History 34 (World Civilization to/since 1500); plus additional assignment in at least one of the following areas: History 5 & 6 (Latin America), History 22 (Middle East), History 24 & 25 (East Asia), History 29 (Jewish), History 32 (Global Environmental), History 53 (Religion), and/or History 55 (History of Science).

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's in history OR bachelor's in history AND master's in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women's studies, social science, or ethnic studies; OR the equivalent* OR possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s).
Preferred Qualifications::
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a high level of professional and pedagogical expertise on the basis of having:
Earned a Doctorate or ABD (nearing completion) in World History or appropriate non-Western History from an accredited college or university; currency in the field of world history, including command of major historiographical debates and active participation in professional activities; demonstrated ability to teach world history course content in the community college classroom and a record of working with and advising students outside the classroom, particularly with analytical writing; commitment to departmental and institutional service, including curriculum development, efforts to improve student success, and active participation in department programs, initiatives, and shared governance; the willingness and ability to teach courses other than individual area of specialization; demonstrated ability to use instructional technology in the classroom, as appropriate to offer curriculum and student learning through diverse and accessible delivery modes; evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural, and ethnic diversity within the community college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as the factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Selection Process:
The selection process shall include the following steps:
(a) A screening/evaluation committee will review application materials to determine minimum qualifications for the position are met;
(b) A pool of qualifying candidates will be invited to an initial interview with the selection committee at the Santa Monica Community College District's main campus or one of its satellite campuses;
(c) Upon completion of initial interview process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for final interview with the Superintendent/President who will recommend a candidate for appointment by the Board of Trustees.
Applicants will be notified by letter of their status as the committee progresses through the hiring process. Candidates who are selected for a final interview with the Superintendent/President should not expect official notification of the status of candidacy until the Board of Trustees has acted upon the Superintendent/President's recommendation.
All travel costs related to an initial interview will be borne by the candidate. Only ½ of the airfare cost to the Superintendent/President's interview will be borne by the college.

Salary: $49,282 - $121,340
Pay Philosophy: Starting salaries for full-time academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.
