The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenured associate professor of late imperial Chinese culture (ca. 1271-1912). The search committee welcomes applications from specialists in any field, preferably with competencies in at least two of the following areas: literature (including poetry, prose, fiction, and drama), cultural studies, and relations between China and Inner Asia. The successful candidate should have broad research interests centered on primary sources and strong training in relevant languages. He or she will contribute to the Department’s undergraduate program by offering a one-semester lecture course on Chinese civilization and other broad-based lecture courses in addition to graduate offerings in his or her fields of expertise. A normal teaching load is 4 courses per year on a semester system. Candidates should have a compelling and original research agenda and a wish to pursue it within the interdisciplinary framework offered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the wider University.
