The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in philosophy. The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position which begins on 1 February 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The position is located at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas.
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate with a focus on Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The associate professor is expected to develop and strengthen the areas of German idealism and subsequent post-idealist and phenomenological approaches at the department. The successful applicant must be able to teach core courses within the philosophy degree programme at all levels, including the history of philosophy.
Research
The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.
The successful applicant is expected to develop and participate in research projects centring on Kant and German idealism, its aftermath in 20th century philosophy and its potential for recent philosophical thinking in various fields (for instance philosophy of technology, culture, society etc.).
Education
The associate professor is expected to teach courses in philosophy in various modules on the BA programme, including the history of philosophy (ancient and modern) and philosophical anthropology. The associate professor will give courses on the MA programme in the track ‘idealism and postidealism’, and he or she is expected to contribute substantially to the interdisciplinary profile of the philosophy programme.
Talent development
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to talent development in the field of philosophy and adjacent fields, and to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the associate professor will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in philosophy, as well as teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must be able to document:
- Substantial research contributions to (1) German idealism or the critical interaction with German idealism, and (2) subsequent continental traditions in 20th century philosophy, especially phenomenology, philosophical anthropology or critical theory.
- Ability to teach core courses in the BA programme in philosophy, including the history of philosophy (ancient and modern), and core courses in the MA programme in philosophy.
- Experience of coordinating courses.
- Experience of supervising student projects and of researcher talent development.
- Participation in national and international networks and in collaborative research projects.
- Experience of applications for external funding.
- Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation.
