The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for position of Lecturer in First-Year Writing.
Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the lecturer position is a non-tenure track academic appointment with a usual teaching load of eight courses per year; the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Successful candidates must show increasing levels of leadership in the program, as well as excellence in teaching. In the sixth year, candidates who demonstrate a consistently strong record of engaged teaching, professional development, plus service to the department, college, and/or profession will be eligible to apply for promotion to senior lecturer. Overall, as holders of annually-funded, renewable faculty positions, lecturers contribute to enhancing the stability, sustainability, and impact of the first-year writing program. Online and summer teaching are optional and available.
Required Qualifications:
Earned master’s degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, or closely-related field suited to the Department of Writing and Linguistics
Minimum of one year of college teaching experience in first-year writing by the time of appointment (graduate assistant teaching experience is permissible)
Experience with technologies common to the field of composition and rhetoric
Evidence of engaged student learning, arising from pedagogical practice informed by the scholarship of the profession
Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate level work in composition, rhetoric, linguistics, writing center theory, or literacy theory
Full-time teaching experience in First-Year Writing
Experience and/or participation within the National Writing Project
Experience or credentials to support teaching professional and technical writing
Screening of applications begins December 1, 2015, and continues until the position is filled. The preferred position starting date is August 1, 2016. A complete application consists of a letter addressing the qualifications cited above; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy highlighting innovative pedagogical practice, engagement strategies, and a vision for a transfer of student learning across domains; three letters of recommendation, plus the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of those individuals writing the three required letters of recommendation.
