The Department of History and Center for African Studies at Duquesne University invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African history. The position is a joint appointment with the Department of History and Center for African Studies. Preferred areas of research are pre-colonial or post-colonial African history. Candidates will be required to teach both North African and sub-Saharan African history, as well as surveys in pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial African history. Specialized graduate and upper division undergraduate History and African Studies courses will be assigned in areas of the candidate's expertise, as well as undergraduate surveys within the University Core Curriculum. The teaching load is 3-3 under a nine month contract beginning August 2016. Completed PhD in History or African Studies with a proven research agenda in North African or sub-Saharan African history is required by June 2016. Qualifications include:
• PhD in History or African Studies
• Teaching and scholarship in African history
• Teaching experience
• A research program of demonstrated potential
Teaching responsibilities may include:
• AFST 150: Introduction to African Studies
• HIST 151:Shaping of the Modern World
• HIST 231: Pre-Colonial Africa
• HIST 251: African History
• HIST 378: Modern Africa since Independence
• Lower- and upper-division undergraduate and graduate History and African Studies courses within specialization
• Advising undergraduate and graduate students
• Writing comprehensive exams and serving as a thesis adviser for graduate History students
The search will continue until the position is filled; however, applications received by November 1, 2015 will receive preferential consideration. Preliminary interviews will be conducted via Skype in late November or early December, and campus visits will be held in December or early January 2016.
