The Canadian War Museum (CWM) is currently seeking for its Research Division, a dynamic individual who will, under the supervision of the Director, Research, CWM, curate exhibitions and undertake or support exhibition development, research, writing, and collections development, in the history of war and visual culture and Canadian military history; liaise with scholarly and public communities of interest as appropriate; support related Museum activities; support visitor services and outreach initiatives, including public programs; provide leadership and services to the community of scholars consistent with Museum interests, priorities, and best practices; provide advice and information to senior management in areas of professional competence; represent the Museum, as requested, to external parties, venues, or processes; and perform other related duties as assigned.
As the ideal candidate, you hold a Master’s degree (minimum) or Doctoral degree (preferred) in the requisite discipline(s) or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
You possess knowledge of:
• Applicable research, research methods, professional activities, literatures, and best practices relating to war and visual culture and related disciplines (see below), at the national and international level;
• Canadian war art, Canadian art, war art, British early twentieth century art, military history;
• War-related film, television, and digital media (fiction and documentary), posters, photography, propaganda, and war memorials, from a Canadian public and military perspective;
• Canadian military history, remembrance, and commemoration, and the general history of visual culture, war, and armed conflict;
• The relationship between war and visual culture, nationally and internationally;
• Applied research and communications for public audiences;
• Professional networks, research opportunities, and emerging or relevant technologies or media;
• The Canadian War Museum’s programs, activities, and operating environment.
You have Doctoral degree, with one (1) year plus of professional experience, or Master’s degree, with five (5) years plus of professional experience in:
• Complex and extensive research on war and visual culture;
• Scholarly communications and research dissemination, including print and non-print publications;
• Evaluation, documentation, or professional usage of material culture for research and communications.
Since you will be working in a highly computerized environment, a demonstrated experience of word processing (Word), electronic spreadsheet (Excel), presentation (Power Point) and electronic mail (Outlook) is required.
