Public History. The Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-line position in Public History at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August 1, 2016. Tenure may be conferred, depending on qualifications. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 2016 in the field of Public History. The department is seeking a dedicated scholar-practitioner who is committed to the public documentation and interpretation of history, effective teaching, and scholarly excellence. Demonstrated record of professional practice in public history preferred. The successful candidate should be able to teach graduate courses in public history, oversee internships, and develop new courses in one or more of the following areas: museum studies, new media, and/or cultural heritage/sites of conscience. Strong candidates will demonstrate that they can build partnerships with area cultural institutions and community groups, participate in grant writing, and support the management of a vibrant graduate program. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school and university activities.
