The School of Architecture & Design, located on the Inveresk campus in Launceston, is an interdisciplinary research and teaching environment committed to a future in which social responsibility and environmental sustainability are essential features of the theory and practice of design. The School, with its disciplines of architecture, interior design, furniture design, and timber material science, has a reputation for research at the nexus of the sciences and humanities, with strong connections to the fields of philosophy, computing, engineering, regional development and visual and performing arts. The School is renowned for its high quality studio-based teaching with a strong learning-by-making tradition.
The University is seeking to appoint a Professor and Head of School of Architecture and Design to provide academic leadership in all aspects of research, research training, teaching and practice. The successful candidate will have an international reputation in a relevant architecture and/or design field and a demonstrated capacity to lead research in interdisciplinary contexts.
The position of Head of School will provide overarching strategic and operational leadership, have line-management responsibility for the School’s staff and will represent the School on Faculty and University committees and in external forums. The Head of School is a member of the Faculty Management Team and will provide advice and assistance to the Dean and Faculty Management Team in establishing and achieving plans relating to the Faculty’s objectives in its strategic plans.
Applicants will have a PhD, a demonstrated capacity for academic leadership and an outstanding record of research and teaching in one or more of the School’s disciplinary areas. Strong commitment to teaching and effective research training, demonstrated success in generating funding and effective relationship management skills are considered essential.
The professorial role is offered on a continuing basis with the Head of School appointment on a fixed-term (renewable) basis for three or five years (in accordance with the Academic Structure Policy). The position is based on Launceston with travel to other campuses required.
