McGill University is seeking an extraordinary individual with demonstrated academic leadership experience and a record of scholarly excellence to become the next Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Located at the centre of McGill’s downtown Montreal campus, the Faculty of Arts has over 330 full-time faculty members, 7000 undergraduates, and 1200 graduate students, making it the University’s largest Faculty. The intellectual diversity of the Faculty is remarkable with programs spanning the breadth of the humanities and social sciences. Students can choose from courses offered in 15 academic departments, 20 interdisciplinary programs, and two professional Schools.
Teaching and research activities in the Faculty of Arts are led by an exceptional professoriate drawn from the world’s best universities, many of whom have come to McGill in the last ten years during a period of unprecedented academic renewal. Arts offers a rich learning environment and is home to internationally renowned research. McGill's success rate in competitions for Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants has been at or near the top among Canadian universities in recent years. Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts is expected to possess the expertise, character, and vision to lead the Faculty in teaching, research and scholarship, and service. She/he will be an innovative thinker and excellent communicator and will be committed to interdisciplinary teaching and research and the success of all students, faculty and staff. Experience in building diverse and collaborative teams, managing and allocating resources, relating to a range of partners including government, and an interest in or experience with fundraising will be important assets. The new Dean must have in interest in further developing McGill’s connection to Quebec society and must have, or make it a priority to develop, capacity for communication in French.
