General Purpose: This individual will be responsible for assisting the Director of the Governance and Local Development (GLD) Program, an interdisciplinary research program on governance and local development in the Middle East that is housed in the MacMillan Center at Yale University. The program draws together scholars from political science, sociology, economics, anthropology and other related fields, at Yale University and other international universities and research institutions. The Research Associate will assist with research projects and grant development, liaise with participating scholars and staff at the MacMillan Center, and manage day-to-day operations of the Program. Participates in planning and monitoring on-going research within the scope of the program’s initiative by communicating with researchers in the field and coordinating collaborative work. Hires and oversees consultants and research assistants in the region, Europe, and in the U.S. Works independently to identify new grant opportunities and to assist with the development of proposals and accompanying budgets. Edits commissioned working manuscripts. Writes in-depth reports for publication on on-going projects and workshops. Organizes one large annual conference each year, including issuing calls for papers, determining the schedule, and planning logistics of event. Supplies content for and oversee development of the website. Manages the daily requirements and activities of the program. Responsible for budgeting and reporting activities. Assists director in overseas research and development trips, traveling abroad when necessary. Supports director in other activities, as needed.
Required Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in a related discipline and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated analytical and research skills with an understanding of the research process.
- Excellent writing skills. Proven ability to assist with preparation of grant proposals as well as to provide inputs into written reports.
- Proven ability to work independently with little supervision. Ability to set priorities and exercise sound judgment.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication, organization and planning skills with an ability to manage large, multi-faceted projects and multiple, simultaneous activities.
- Flexibility and ability to function effectively in varied settings, within the US and abroad.
- Preferred: Master’s Degree in a relevant field of study. Proficiency in Arabic/English, ideally trilingual with French. Two years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
