Two postdoctoral research fellowships are available in the fields of knowledge from the Global South and the history and anthropology of the Indian Ocean. Candidates must have been awarded a PhD in the last five years in the field of the Social Sciences and Humanities. The fellowship is tenable for two years maximum, with renewal after one year based on performance and progress. The package consists of stipend @ R 187 200 per annum tax free; research costs @ R 10 000 on application per annum; relocation costs @ up to R 10 000 once off and Medical aid.
The Centre for Indian Studies in Africa was established in 2009 and carries on research and research supervision at the Masters and PhD level in the broad field of the social science and humanities. Our theoretical focus seeks to move beyond national histories and works with the idea of transnational affinities across the Indian Ocean and the conceptual space of the global south. While thinking about space we emphasize connections, movement and migration over national borders. With regard to temporality, we ask the question of what it means to think before, beside and beyond the space of colonialism and that of modernity contending with genealogies that engage with an abbreviated time of 500 years. Finally, there is the exigent programme of engaging with knowledge from the spaces of Islam, the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and Africa to redress the hegemony of a Euro American paradigm in our universities and in our intellectual production.
Selected candidates will be required to undertake focused and high quality research; engage in teaching one course at the undergraduate level; and assist in the organisation of a workshop/conference on theme/s related to their research and the intellectual programme of the Centre
Please send your CV; statement of proposed research (not more than 5 pages maximum); and three references directly to the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa by 15 June 2015
