James Madison College seeks a colleague for a 1-Year, Fixed Term, Assistant Professor position (with possible extension to 2 years) in Comparative Cultures and Politics (CCP) in James Madison College. The teaching load is 2-3, 2-2.
Comparative Cultures and Politics (CCP) is an interdisciplinary major that studies how culture and politics intersect in global public affairs. The CCP major offers a sophomore sequence of courses introducing the study of culture and politics in comparative and transnational perspective, as well as electives in the areas of Comparative Studies and Transnational Studies and a capstone seminar. James Madison College (JMC) provides a liberal education in public affairs, combing the ethos of a small liberal arts college with the advantages of a large, diverse university. The faculty's primary mission is excellence in undergraduate teaching, and the college is noted for its rigorous academic standards and attention to the analytical, writing and speaking skills of its students. JMC is home to four minors: Muslim Studies; Western European Studies; Political Economy; and Science, Technology, the Environment and Public Policy. In addition, JMC has close working relationships with MSU's area studies centers and its many international teaching and research centers.
The ideal candidate should be able to contribute to the CCP sophomore sequence (MC 230: Cultures and Politics in Comparative Perspectives and MC 231: Cultures and Politics in Transnational Perspectives),a capstone seminar (MC 493) on a topic of her/his choice, and to elective courses in the major. The ideal candidate should have research interests outside of the U.S. and will be able to teach at least two of the following elective courses: MC 386 Women and Power in Comparative Perspective, MC 385 Comparative Race and Ethnic Relations, MC 482 Gender and Violent Conflict, MC 377 Culture and Post colonialism, MC 430 Applied International Development. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach in JMC's first-year course in Public Affairs.
Applicants should supply a statement, addressing how their teaching and research interests would contribute to CCP curriculum specifically and to Madison College's curriculum and mission more broadly. Supporting materials should include a vita, transcript, three confidential letters of recommendation that speak to teaching expertise and scholarly promise, evidence of teaching approach and effectiveness, sample syllabi, and a sample of scholarship (e.g., dissertation chapter, article, conference paper).
