The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a full-time position of Coordinator and Lecturer III in Hebrew Language, to begin September 1, 2015. The Coordinator will provide supervision and leadership for the faculty teaching Hebrew language. Responsibilities include 5-8 instructional hours per week, active leadership in curricular and program affairs, student advising, and supervision of program faculty (particularly focused on mentorship for new faculty). This is a non-tenure-track, university-year appointment for an initial three-year period. The appointment is renewable for an additional multi-year period, contingent upon successful performance reviews.
The Department of Near Eastern Studies teaches Hebrew language, literature, and cultural studies as part of its comprehensive program in Near Eastern Studies. The Coordinator will lead one of five modern language programs (along with Arabic, Armenian, Persian, and Turkish). S/he will also be part of the broader intellectual community of the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies.
Required qualifications are an advanced degree (preferably Ph.D.) in Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language Pedagogy, Education, or Hebrew/Israeli culture and history; native or near-native fluency in Hebrew and English; and a record of excellence in teaching language and culture at the university level using a proficiency-based, communicative methodology.
Desired qualifications include previous experience teaching advanced level courses in Hebrew, coordinating programs and training instructors, developing new curriculum and using technology in language instruction. An ACTFL (OPI) certification is preferable.
Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in other duties.
