Professor/Associate Professor of Chinese History and Culture (Ref.: 201500068)
The School of Chinese seeks a scholar of high calibre to fill the tenure-track appointment as Professor/Associate Professor of Chinese History and Culture, to commence on September 1, 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. An appointee with demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure towards the end of the second three-year contract.
The School values a strong commitment to the development of innovative research paradigms and pedagogical approaches. Primary teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, but the appointee will also be expected to supervise M.Phil. dissertations and Ph.D. projects. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chinese history or related areas. They should pursue an active agenda of research and publication that can complement and reinforce the Programme's strengths in the broad spectrum of Chinese historical, religious and cultural studies. The successful candidate should be able to develop and conduct courses in (a) the history of the Qin and Han dynasties; (b) the history of the pre-Qin periods; and/or (c) key Chinese historical texts such as Shiji and Hanshu.
A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience will be offered. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as annual leave, and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
