The Institute for the Medical Humanities (IMH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB), in collaboration with the Institutional Ethics Program, invites applications for a faculty position. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary faculty in ethics, history, law, policy, literature, religious studies, and visual studies who engage in research and teaching of students in the health professions and graduate students in the biomedical sciences and humanities. UTMB is developing programs in health policy issues, transplantation, correctional health, infectious disease/biodefense, and translational medicine. The IMH is home of the nation’s only PhD program in medical humanities.
This position will serve as a clinical ethicist and Director of the Clinical Ethics Service, joining the IMH faculty as an Associate Professor. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and directing the clinical ethics activities for the UTMB Health System, including providing formal and informal ethics consultations, organizing and participating in clinical ethics rounds, and collaborating with clinical teams, patients and families, to address ethical issues in health care.
Qualified candidates will have a PhD in philosophy, ethics, medical humanities, or bioethics; and/or an MD degree with graduate-level training at the master or fellowship level; or relevant terminal degree. The candidate should have a minimum of two years’ clinical experience as an ethicist in a health care organization, preferably in an academic health center. Among other duties, the Clinical Ethicist will be responsible for: (1) providing ethics consultation, advice, and education on ethical issues and dilemmas in inpatient, outpatient, and correctional managed care settings; (2) managing the Ethics Consultation Service, ensuring availability, scheduling and communication skills of consultants; providing ongoing training, education, and evaluation of consult service members; and providing reports to the Health System as required of service activities; (3) participate in and provide support for the Institutional Ethics Committee; (4) serve as an Independent Living Donor Advocate for potential living kidney donors in the Transplant Program by advocating, educating, evaluating, and promoting the best interests of the potential donor; (5) facilitating the development and evaluation of clinical ethics initiatives and services in support of UTMB patient care; (6) planning, delivery, and evaluation of ethics education for health care practitioners, residents, students, and community; (7) providing advice, both formally and informally, to providers, staff, and other leaders in the Health System to clarify ethical dimensions of patient care issues and organizational decisions via intentional rounding, clinical department staff meetings, leadership meetings, and responding to requests for feedback; (8) developing and maintaining effective policies and operating procedures related to ethics, and providing guidance to practitioners and organizational leaders in right action in clinical care that meet regulatory standards; (9) providing leadership for and representing the Clinical Ethics Service on hospital committees, task forces, initiatives, and relevant community groups; (10) participating in teaching, research, and scholarly activities and providing ethics consultations as needed, related to clinical and translational research as an IMH faculty member ; and (11) providing on-call service nights and weekends for the Ethics Consultation Service. Salary and rank is negotiable based on experience.
