Job Summary: Naropa University seeks candidates for Core Candidate Assistant Professor for an appointment to the Contemplative Education masters- and bachelors-level programs. We seek a scholar-teacher-practitioner to teach courses in the graduate and undergraduate Education programs and to take a leadership role in revising and managing undergraduate and graduate curricula leading to teacher licensure and managing relationships with placement site schools.
Candidates should have competencies in the areas of teacher preparation programs, university teaching and assessment and some familiarity with contemplative practice and pedagogy. The graduate and undergraduate Education programs offer a unique and creative approach to the field, integrating academic rigor, experiential pre-professional training, and contemplative education. We seek candidates with demonstrated track-records of excellence in teaching at the college level. Job Duties:
- Teach 20 credits per year or equivalent combination of teaching and administrative duties.
- Hold weekly office hours to meet with students and prospective students.
- Collaborate with program faculty in Teacher Preparation Program curriculum development and assessment.
- Oversee Teacher Preparation Program, including cultivating relationships with pre-service teacher supervisors in the community.
- Oversee the Teacher Preparation Program and Endorsement Areas application to the Colorado Department of Education within the first year of hire.
- Serve as a mentor to students in the programs.
- Service responsibilities include participation in regular program and faculty meetings; program evaluation, assessment and curriculum design; participation in admissions recruitment and marketing efforts; support and retention of students (including interviewing prospective students), marketing, and other program tasks.
- Attend University-wide faculty meetings and serve on faculty committees as appointed.
- Pursue professional development in the education field (trainings, research, writing, presentations, etc.).
- Engage in continuing development in contemplative practice, diversity and sustainability awareness.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D.
- Minimum of 3 years of college-level teaching experience, including teaching in state approved teacher preparation programs, preferably Early Education (Pre-K – 3) and/or Elementary.
- Capacity to teach in all Naropa contemplative education programs – Teacher Preparation Program, masters level Contemplative Education and Early Childhood Education undergraduate program.
- Experience with the curriculum development and application process for Colorado Department of Education Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) authorization, or similar State TPPs, including developing program assessment tools in line with state standards.
- Strong academic administrative experience and strategic planning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with Colorado Department of Education or comparable state licensing body to maintain Teacher Preparation Program accreditation: networking, systems management, knowledge of teacher effectiveness and pedagogy.
- Demonstrated capacity to build good working relationships locally in the schools and with Boulder Valley teachers who might serve as supervising teachers.
- Minimum of 5 years working in schools.
- Demonstrated commitment to contemplative and/or transformative learning pedagogies.
- Demonstrated experience, understanding, and leadership abilities with respect to cultural competence and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated capacity to participate in Naropa’s contemplative education initiatives.
- Experience in contemplative teaching.
- Capacity to participate in seeking external funding.
- Capacity to engage nationally in the development of the academic field of contemplative education and contemplative teacher preparation programs.
- Some familiarity with teaching online courses.
