Assistant editor, Freedmen and Southern Society Project, University of Maryland.
Applications are invited from scholars specializing in Southern and/or African American history of the Reconstruction era. Successful applicant will collaborate in producing Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867, beginning with a volume on family and kinship during the early years of Reconstruction. Appointment begins August 31, 2015. Although the position is not tenure-track, it provides faculty standing and benefits as well as the possibility of multi-year employment. Qualifications: Ph.D. in hand or dissertation in progress, strong analytical and writing skills, immersion in the relevant scholarship, facility in reading and interpreting nineteenth-century handwritten documents; preference for applicants with research experience in the records at the National Archives on which Freedom is based, especially those of the Freedmen's Bureau.

For best consideration, all materials should be received by November 1, 2014. A short list of candidates will be interviewed during the AHA meeting in January.
