The Intellectual Heritage Program administers a two-semester interdisciplinary humanities curriculum required of all undergraduates. The two-course sequence, which is organized around such themes as Community, Faith, Science, Power, and City introduces students to works of literature, philosophy, and social and political theory that have shaped notions of self and society from antiquity to the present (e.g. the Iliad, Plato's Apology, the Daodejing, The Origin of Species,Capital, The Souls of Black Folk, Civilization and Its Discontents, The Second Sex, The Death and Life of Great American Cities). Both of the seminar-style courses promote critical inquiry, cultivated through close reading, debate, and writing. The teaching load will be four classes per semester, with 25-30 students per class.
