Gender & Women's Studies Instructor (Full Time, Fall 2014)

This is a full-time, categorically funded, non-tenure track academic position. The successful candidate will chair the Gender and Women’s Studies Department and teach several Gender and Women’s Studies courses each term. The Gender and Women’s Studies curriculum currently consists of more than 15 different cross-listed courses, including a core of Introduction to Women’s Studies, Psychology of Women, Women in American History, Women in Cross Cultural Perspective, and Women in American Government. As chair, the successful candidate will lead the development of course curriculum offerings in the Gender and Women’s Studies program specifically to include courses that address where human identities intersect, including race, sex, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, and sexual orientation and how they interact on multiple levels. It is the vision of the college to reignite the energy that once embodied the Gender and Women’s Studies program and to position our offering of courses to embrace gender identity, sexuality, and LGBT studies.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
As a fulltime faculty member in the Social Science Division, the successful candidate will also:
• Use and develop a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods to engage student interest and address a variety of learning styles.
• Integrate instructional technology into the classroom.
• Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and learning outcomes.
• Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, census reports).
• Participate in Social Science schedule development process.
• Assess student learning and develop plans to improve student learning based on student outcomes.
• Develop curriculum and participate in the program review processes.
• Engage in activities that enhance the Gender and Women’s Studies Department’s rapport with area high schools, colleges and community organizations.
• Participate in faculty recruitment.
• Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance committees and campus life activities.
• Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
• Continue professional development and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops, and other appropriate means.
• Attend quarterly collaborative meetings and actively participate in the Women’s Study Collaborative for Monterey and Santa Cruz, a group sponsored by the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation.
• Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the MPCTA Contract, and as assigned at the Monterey campus, the Education Center at Marina, and/or other designated locations.
• Master’s degree in Women’s Studies, OR
• Master’s in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area of MPC’s Women’s Studies program (Anthropology, Art, English, Ethnic Studies, Health, History, Humanities, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology or Political Science) AND upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline OR
• A California Community College Instructor Credential (valid for life) in the subject matter OR
• The equivalent. 7. Candidates with a background in feminist theory will prove essential in positioning the program to flourish.

WORK SCHEDULE / SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Anticipated Starting Compensation
This is a full-time, categorically funded, non-tenure track academic position contingent on receipt of funding. Starting at $51,971–$70,474 annually, based on documented education and experience. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate can also earn a Doctoral stipend of $2,850 or a multiple Masters’ stipend of $2,021, if applicable. In addition, the District provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including paid medical and dental coverage for employees and dependents, and a vision plan, life insurance and long-term disability benefits for the employee only. Retirement is the State Teachers’ Retirement System. Participation in tax deferred plans is available.
Assignment & Anticipated Start Date
The assigned work year is 175.5 days per academic year. The assignment will include 15 teaching load units (TLUs) plus five office hours per week. Selected candidates will participate in campus-wide events beginning the week of August 18, 2014.
