Iowa State University has launched the Presidential High Impact Hires Initiative to support targeted faculty hiring in areas of strategic importance. The College of Design is seeking one full-time (9 month), tenure-track assistant/associate professor with academic/professional experience in historic preservation as one of the interdisciplinary, high-impact hires targeted in this Presidential Initiative. The position will leverage expertise of existing faculty members and coursework across the University (Architecture, Community & Regional Planning, Graphic Design, History and Anthropology, Industrial Design, Integrated Studio Arts, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture) to develop graduate and undergraduate degree concentrations in Historic Preservation; and will lead efforts that ultimately result in developing a new Master of Historic Preservation program (requires Board of Regents approval). The faculty member is expected to build an integrated program of research and extension in Historic Preservation. In addition to leveraging and building on national and international resources for the program (ISU's College of Design center in Rome, for example) the position is of particular significance in the development of a new partnership with the city of Sioux City, IA to support research and provide opportunities for hands-on learning for students.
The position offers opportunities to work with undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities include: teaching graduate lecture and seminar courses; maintaining an active record of creative research and scholarship in historic preservation; advising graduate students, and participating in service activities within the department, college, and university.
- Ph.D. and at least one degree in Historic Preservation or closely related discipline; demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and/or community.
- Evidence or promise of exemplary research and/or practice, as well as effective teaching.
For the rank of Associate Professor: in addition to the qualifications listed above, the candidate must have a record of substantial scholarship and be established as a significant contributor to the field or profession with national and international distinction.
Demonstrated evidence of national and/or international scholarship in preservation policy and economic development at local, regional, state, and national/international levels; knowledge of and experience working with certified local government programs and historic preservation tax credits; college level teaching experience; interdisciplinary instruction and/or research; record of seeking and securing external grant funding; evidence of innovative pedagogy, including use of emerging technology for distance learning.
