The Department of Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position at the open rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with an expertise in Architecture, Urban Design, and Urbanism Theory.
Research and scholarship of the successful candidate should focus on Urban Design and/or Theories of Architecture and Urbanism. She or he is expected to engage the sociopolitical interface between design, environment and economy. The areas of expertise might include: urban ecology and geography; representation, mapping and modeling; social, philosophical and economic theories of the city; and globalization, internationalization and infrastructure. The Department seeks an individual committed to advancing knowledge of issues that address both spatial and temporal thinking inherent in the above areas of expertise.
The new faculty member is expected to teach beginning and advanced design studios, urban design studios, as well as lecture and seminar-based history and theory courses at graduate and undergraduate levels. The candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to a new interdisciplinary Master of Urban Design degree in the College of Design.
The Department of Architecture is housed within the College of Design alongside the Departments of Landscape Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Integrated Studio Arts. We seek committed educators and researchers who are ambitious, creative, collegial, and collaborative. The Department of Architecture offers two accredited degrees: a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture. It also offers a post-professional degree, Master of Science in Architecture. The Department is an active participant in interdisciplinary programs such as a shared college-wide Design foundation curriculum, Bachelor of Design, Master of Urban Design and Master of Design in Sustainable Environments.

Professional undergraduate and a post-professional degree in Architecture or related studio-based field; or, professional master's degree in Architecture or related studio-based field; or PhD in a relevant field. Evidence or promise of exemplary research and/or practice, as well as effective teaching.
For the rank of Associate Professor: in addition to the qualifications listed above, the candidate must have a record of substantial scholarship and be established as a significant contributor to the field or profession with national and international distinction.
- Experience working and/or teaching within multiple disciplines.
- College-level teaching experience and experience in curriculum development in a professional design program.
- Evidence of innovative pedagogy including the use of emerging technologies.
- Record of seeking and securing external grant funding.
- Demonstrated evidence of national and/or international scholarship in the field of Urban Design and/or Theories of Architecture and Urbanism.
- PhD in Architecture, Urban Design, Design Studies, History and Theory of Architecture, Urbanism or Design, or a related field.
- Professional registration in architecture or related discipline.
Rank, salary and start-up support will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, subject to terms of appointment.
